The objective of our ongoing research is to identify, develop, and implement a set of algorithms, which can be used for identifying novel miRNAs and their targets.  These algorithms are unique in that they do not depend on cross-species sequence conservation.  Our prediction algorithm centers on a novel meta-classification tool built using a dynamic Markov chain that learns the structure of miRNAs as seen through our new visualization tool, TCGR. We use molecular biology and transgenic studies to validate the existence of and expression patterns for newly predicted miRNAs. Our initial work is targeting C. elegans, but future studies will expand to other species. We will also create an online tool that can be used by other researchers to apply our algorithms to new genome data.
